Zohran Mamdani Pledges a 'New Era' for New York City in Inaugural Speech
During an initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” New York City, ushering in “a new era” and an ambitious commencement to his term.
An Unprecedented Mayor
The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
