Patients Coming Off Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that people who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing such medications need to be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated regain.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

People who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense resurgence of appetite.

"It was like something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said a patient.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural support.
