Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

However, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

This means, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
