A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” stated the country's president.
The official announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the year before. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in national works. They were completed at an rapid rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party called for an immediate halt in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a thorough technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these vital initiatives.
